Renowned writer and social activist, Mrs. Arundhati Roy, has been conferred with the prestigious PG National Award 2023 by the P Govinda Pillai Sanskriti Kendra in Thiruvananthapuram. This distinguished award, established in memory of the esteemed Marxist philosopher and writer P Govinda Pillai, recognizes individuals who embody the values and ideals championed by PG throughout his influential life.
The jury, chaired by MA Baby and comprising writers KR Meera and Shabnam Hashmi, selected Arundhati Roy for her unwavering commitment to humanitarian causes, demonstrated through her prolific work, writings, and advocacy. Notably, she has actively engaged in popular struggles across the country, contributing significantly to the creative landscape of social activism.
Arundhati Roy’s advocacy for freedom of expression and human rights has earned her high commendation, making her a fitting recipient of the PG Award. As a committed creative writer and author of socially critical books, she adds this accolade to her already impressive list of honors. Previous recipients of the national award include prominent figures such as lawyer Prashant Bhushan and journalist N Ram.
The award presentation ceremony is scheduled for December 13, 2023, at 3 pm in Ayyankali Hall, where Arundhati Roy will be felicitated by distinguished journalist and former editor of The Hindu, Shri N Ram. The award includes a prize of three lakh rupees and a citation.
The PG Sanskriti Kendra, established in 2019 in memory of P Govinda Pillai, aims to preserve and propagate PG’s ideology. The center houses PG’s book collection at Mulakkal House in Subhash Nagar, open to the public. The library also features donations from PG’s daughter, Lakshmi Devi, including books from renowned poet Sugata Kumari Teacher and writer Chandramati.
The administrative team of the PG Sanskriti Kendra comprises V Joy MLA as the Executive Director, R Parvati Devi as the Secretary, and KC Vikraman as the Treasurer. Through its initiatives, the Kendra continues to uphold the legacy and ideals of P Govinda Pillai.
